Braces

Braces have been used for years to help straighten, align, and space teeth properly.  From minor corrections to major readjustments, braces are a great solution for both structural and cosmetic problems.  Here at McPherson Dental Care, we can help you create a smile that you will be proud to share!

What they do

Braces have been an important tool for correcting several common oral problems.  By slowly pressuring teeth (including the roots and underlying bone) into desired positions, braces are capable of fixing underbites, overbites, cross bites, crooked teeth, and much more.

Crooked teeth can be tough to clean properly, which increases risk of cavities and periodontal disease.  Misaligned bites can create discomfort, difficulty in biting or chewing, and even asymmetrical facial structure.  Braces can solve all these problems!

The Procedure

Typically, braces consist of brackets cemented to the outer surface of your teeth, an arch wire connecting the brackets, and elastics to either hold the wire in place or add extra directional pressure to certain teeth.  The brackets are usually made of stainless steel – although ceramic, plastic, or titanium brackets can be used for people with allergies or cosmetic preferences.

Braces put constant pressure on your teeth, which loosens the roots and slowly shifts them into the desired position.  As your teeth move, the underlying bone must heal and grow around those changes to make them permanent.

Time Frame

Because braces alter the structure of underline bone and shift the roots of your teeth, changes must be made slowly.  Dentists will only make adjustments every few weeks and, depending on the severity of the case, braces might be worn anywhere from six months to two and a half years.
